The Lloyd-Jones Meakin Group has been working with a major mining company in Western Australia. Initially, LJM was asked to provide assistance in improving the effectiveness of the company's existing behavioural safety program. Mining Industry imageThe company adapted the process to ensure that managers engage employees in proactive, problem-solving discussions on safety.

After working with the team and building an understanding of the organisation's progress on their safety journey, LJM broadened its involvement and completed a cultural survey. The organisation was faced with a number of challenges, including a shift from an almost permanent workforce to an increased use of contractors. LJM partnered with the safety management team to develop a new strategic plan for health and safety. A major focus of the plan was establishing ownership for safety amongst the company's leadership and line employees. LJM helped set up and facilitate a Safety Leadership Team to guide the organisation's safety improvement.

The organisation has been working hard to breathe life into its Safety Management system and integrate it into business processes. A major successful activity was LJM's delivery of its "Principles of Health and Safety" training to line managers. Over three years, LJM helped the organisation to focus on the right activities in the right order and at the right time. Even against a backdrop of a dramatically changing work environment, the organisation has made continued improvements in safety performance.
